Ultrasound-Guided Cannulation of the Subclavian Vein

One of our department's faculty members, Dr. Neal Gerstein, recently collaborated on an educational video for clinicians that has been published by the New England Journal of Medicine. The video demonstrates safe cannulation of the subclavian vein under ultrasound guidance. The authors also discuss relevant indications and contraindications for the procedure; appropriate equipment and preparation; the placement procedure itself; and how to avoid, recognize, and treat potential complications.

When access to the central circulation is appropriate, the subclavian site can offer a number of benefits that may be further enhanced by the use of ultrasound guidance. The safe performance of this procedure helps to reduce the incidence and severity of complications.

We congratulate Dr. Gerstein for his part in this effort to share best practices for the improvement of patient care and safety.
