Vice Chair for Research

Vice Chair for Research

Karin High, PhD

The Vice Chair for Research is in charge of the overall research mission of the Department. The research mission of the Department is to develop, support, and promote research in the Department consistent with HSC goals. This includes the performance of clinical and translational studies, as well as the basic science research in the Department’s Laboratory for Pain Relief Studies. The Vice Chair works to support research excellence among the collaborating faculty, residents, fellows, research staff, medical and graduate students.

The Vice Chair supervises and supports excellence in the Department’s clinical, translational, and basic science research studies with the assistance of its dedicated support staff. The research staff and the Vice Chair provide assistance with the research studies, the experimental design, statistics, and data analysis, as well as provide support for data presentation, abstract, manuscript and grant writing. The Vice Chair sees the role of the support staff as an essential part of a strategy to improve research in the Department.

The Vice Chair manages the Anesthesiology Laboratory for Pain Relief Studies and its regulatory requirements. The Laboratory is specially equipped to examine chronic pain mechanisms, chronic pain induced circuitry alterations, and the development, testing and bio-distribution of novel non-opioid drugs for chronic pain relief. The Anesthesiology Laboratory is also designed to test diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. The Vice Chair helps ensure that the Department and all its clinical, basic science, and staff members follow compliance rules through education, monitoring and auditing of the research measures set forth by the HSC, NIH, Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC).
