Vice Chair for Education

Eli Torgeson, MD
Associate Professor

The Vice Chair for Education is in charge of the overall educational missions of the Department. First and foremost is our Anesthesiology Residency Program. We are fully accredited by the ACGME and participate in continued accreditation activities. We were one of twenty anesthesiology programs in the country testing the Anesthesiology Milestones before full implementation by the ACGME.

In addition to educating our physician residents, our faculty are committed and deeply involved in undergraduate medical education. We serve as tutorial leaders, continuity clinic mentors, research supervisors and sit on many committees serving the overall mission of the Medical School. We are a training site for Anesthesiology Assistant (AA) programs from across the country. Our AA student rotation has become so popular we have more applicants than we can accommodate. Local EMT training programs, mostly military service members, come to our operating rooms to get training in airway management.

Within the Health Care System, we also provide training to residents of other specialties (ENT, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine) in addition to continued exposure to intensivists, hospitalists and other specialists. We work in a dynamic, Level 1 trauma center that affords all our trainees exposure to a wide variety of cases and patients.
