Each September, our fellows are given the opportunity to be part of mission trip that UNM has been taking part in for over 10 years. We travel to Guayaquil, Ecuador and work for one week at the large children’s hospital there where pediatric orthopedic surgeries are performed for poor children who would otherwise not have the money or resources to afford surgery.
The trip is physically and emotionally demanding, but rewarding in so many different ways. In addition, it is an awesome opportunity to perform a variety of regional techniques given the surgeries being performed and the lack of plentiful options for post-operative pain control. Almost ever child receives a ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve block or neuraxial technique for post-operative pain management. Nearly all expenses are covered.
