Our department provides a wide range of obstetric anesthesia services for pregnant women across the state. We provide labor analgesia both for complicated deliveries and uncomplicated births upon request. A dedicated team of an experienced obstetric anesthesiologist and a well-trained resident is present on the Labor and Delivery ward at all times to provide specialized care to women in labor. We provide labor analgesia using the latest technology, so our patients can enjoy the flexibility of patient controlled epidural analgesia.
Labor and Delivery, a state-of-the-art facility, is located in the new wing of the hospital. There are three operating rooms within the unit. We regularly provide anesthesia for Cesarean deliveries and other pregnancy and labor-related surgeries. We see and provide consultation for complicated patients on a regular basis and have the expertise to handle difficult cases and emergencies. In collaboration with the high-risk maternity team, we take care of the sickest, most complicated, parturients from the entire state.
UNM is a tertiary referral center; the 24-bed Newborn Intensive Care Unit, which is capable of caring for critically ill or premature infants, is located right next to Labor and Delivery.
Residents rotate through the mandatory obstetric anesthesiology rotations in their CA-1 and CA-2 years. They are also offered the option of an advanced, 3-month, subspecialty track in Obstetric Anesthesia. The educational program is offered by our faculty in form of one-on-one clinical teaching and didactic lectures. The residents become proficient in various anesthetic techniques such as epidural, spinal, and combined spinal-epidural analgesia and anesthesia.
